Historic Cemetery Tours

Encounter old and new friends during a fascinating informative wander through Newburyport's Oak Hill Cemetery, Old Hill Burying Ground, and Highland Cemetery. Learn about sea captains, writers, clockmakers, mayors, and the builder of the ship, Dreadnaught. Visit the grave of a sea captain who William Lloyd Garrison tried to convict as a slave trader, say hello to a chaplain who served with Colonel Benedict Arnold, and hear about Newburyport’s well known photographers. Come join us and learn about fascinating history while visiting Newburyport’s historic cemeteries.

Admission: $2.00 goes to the Yankee Homecoming general fund. Any additional donations collected at the end of the tours will go directly to cemetery projects.

Tour Guide: Ghlee E. Woodworth 12th generation Newburyport native and daughter of the late Todd C. Woodworth who began Tiptoe Through the Tombstone Tours in 1988. Ghlee is currently working on a book about Oak Hill Cemetery, scheduled to be published December 2008.

Monday, July 28th, 10:00AM – 11:30AM.  Visit the gravesites of Newburyport authors, newspaper editors, librarians, and benefactors.  Tour the Brown Chapel currently under restoration.
Wednesday, July 30th, 2:00PM – 3:30PM.  Visit the graves of Newburyport mayors, ministers, doctors, and architects. Tour the Brown Chapel currently under restoration.
Friday, August 1st, 2:00PM – 3:30PM. Visit the gravesites of Newburyport photographers, sea captains, shipbuilders, and silversmiths. Tour the Brown Chapel currently under restoration.
