YANKEE HOMECOMING’S Youth Community Service Award

About the Award

The Newburyport Youth Community Service Award is presented to a high school senior and a high school junior from Newburyport demonstrating a strong commitment to public service and volunteerism. These award winners will be presented with a savings bond that will mature to $500 and they will be featured in events throughout the Yankee Homecoming festivities commending their service and encouraging Newburyport youth to pursue similar community service activities.

Congratulations to this year's Youth Community Service Award Winners!

Derek StehlinDerek Stehlin
Senior, Newburyport High School

Derek was nominated for his volunteer work with a number of organizations, including the Gulf of Maine Institute, the American Red Cross and the Newburyport Public Library. His has helped remove invasive Perennial Pepperweed from Gulf of Maine habitats. He also took a lead role in the Carry Out Café for Horton Terrace's annual Christmas Dinner as Vice President of Interact.

Newburyport High School Principal Michael Parent had this to say about Derek’s work ethic: “Derek juggles a schedule that is truly daunting. His commitments include: working two jobs, community service, clubs, class historian, Gulf of Maine Institute, and his academics.”

Erin Hickey Erin Hickey
Junior, Newburyport High School

Erin was nominated for her volunteer work at Anna Jaques Hospital, where she volunteers regularly making beds after patients have left and preparing food for patients coming in. She also helps out by refilling stations that are low on supplies.

The volunteer coordinator at Anna Jaques had this to say about Erin’s efforts: “Having such a dependable, young student here on a regular basis really makes a difference in overall patient care. Erin's positive attitude has been delightful here at Anna Jaques.”
